How many hydrogen stations are open?
Counts of public stations that can fuel a car, from the U.S. Department of Energy database, pulled September 20, 2026.
The U.S. retail hydrogen network is small, concentrated and changeable. Shell left car fueling in 2024, a delivery-trailer accident in February 2026 took most California stations offline for weeks, and several stations are still listed with no reopening date. At the same time new stations keep opening, and truck fueling is expanding at the ports. We publish the counts, the closures timeline and every station's last-confirmed date.
What hydrogen costs right now
Hydrogen is sold by the kilogram. One kilogram holds about the energy of a gallon of gasoline and takes a fuel cell car 50 to 70 miles.

How refueling works
It feels like filling a gasoline car, with a sealed nozzle and a lot more pressure.
Pick H70
Passenger cars fill at 700 bar. H35 is for buses and trucks and only gives a car about half a tank.
Lock the nozzle
It seals to the car before any gas flows, and the dispenser pressure-tests the connection.
Three to five minutes
The car and dispenser talk over infrared so the tank never overheats. The hose gets very cold.
250 to 400 miles
A full fill is 4 to 6 kg. A busy or low-pressure station may stop short of full.

How many hydrogen stations are there in the U.S.?
As of September 20, 2026, DOE data lists 38 open public stations that can fuel a car, 14 temporarily unavailable and 14 planned. 37 of the open stations are in California. The station status tracker lists every one.
Are hydrogen stations closing?
Some have. Shell closed all of its California car stations in February 2024, other operators shut stations in late 2023, and a supply disruption in early 2026 took most of the network offline for weeks. New stations are also opening, so the network is shrinking slowly and unevenly rather than disappearing. The tracker has a dated timeline.
How much does hydrogen fuel cost?
About $30 to $36 per kilogram at California pumps; the U.S. DOE's April 2026 report put the national average at $28.46 per gallon-equivalent. A Toyota Mirai fill-up costs roughly $170 to $200, or about 55 to 65 cents per mile. See hydrogen fuel cost or the calculator.

What is the difference between H35 and H70?
They are fueling pressures. H70 (700 bar) is what passenger fuel cell cars use. H35 (350 bar) is for buses, trucks and forklifts. Most California retail stations offer both. More in how refueling works.
How long does it take to refuel a hydrogen car?
Three to five minutes for a full fill when the station is at full pressure. It can be slower, or stop short of full, if the station has just served several cars.
