Hydrogen in the Bay Area

The Bay Area currently has the most open hydrogen stations of any region in the country, and the most in the pipeline. Coverage is strongest in the South Bay and Silicon Valley (San Jose, Campbell, Cupertino, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Mountain View) and the East Bay (Oakland, Fremont, Concord, San Ramon). Mill Valley is the only station north of the Golden Gate.

The weak spot is the Peninsula and San Francisco itself. South San Francisco and Palo Alto are both listed as unavailable, and Palo Alto has not been re-confirmed by the DOE in over a year, so drivers between San Jose and the city have no station on the way. Planned sites in Redwood City and Los Altos would close that gap if they open. Oakland also has the country's first public heavy-duty hydrogen truck stop at the port, which does not serve cars.

Practical notes

• Iwatani's Mountain View station keeps daytime hours rather than 24-hour access. Check before an evening fill.
• For a Tahoe or Sacramento trip, West Sacramento is the only stop east of Concord.
