Hydrogen between the big metros

Three open stations cover a very large area. Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara serve the 101 corridor northwest of Los Angeles, and True Zero's station at Harris Ranch in Coalinga sits on Interstate 5 roughly halfway between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Harris Ranch is the station that makes a north-south trip possible at all: without it, the two halves of the California network are out of range of each other for most fuel-cell cars.

Planned stations in Camarillo and Ventura would fill in the 101 between Thousand Oaks and Santa Barbara. There is no hydrogen on the coast north of Santa Barbara: nothing in San Luis Obispo, Monterey or Santa Cruz.

• Before an L.A. to Bay Area drive, check Harris Ranch's live status and have a plan if it is down. There is no backup on I-5.
